Procurement

As the Assistant Manager in Procurement at Nippon Paint, my tenure with the company, which commenced in the early 2000s, has been a dynamic exploration marked by continuous growth. My professional journey within Nippon Paint has been shaped by the company's commitment to job rotation, enabling me to fill various roles.

My initial foray into the company was as a Lab Technician, a role that, while not a perfect fit, served as my entry point. After a brief four months, I transitioned to Production Planning, delving into the intricacies of planning and managing production processes, including scheduling, resource allocation, and optimizing production workflows. This phase not only broadened my horizons but also saw me stepping into chemical handling. Three years ago, my career path led me to Procurement, a role where I leverage my accumulated experience to source chemicals and raw materials for paint manufacturing, fostering meaningful interactions with a diverse array of suppliers.

The challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic underscored the resilience of our Procurement team. Despite the supply chain disruptions, we successfully ensured a consistent inflow of essential raw materials to sustain our production, a feat that set us apart as one of the few paint manufacturers never experiencing stockouts during that challenging period.

Reflecting on my journey, I am particularly proud of the growth I've witnessed in the company. Nippon Paint's evolving corporate structure, coupled with excellent staff benefits, exemplifies its commitment to fostering a nurturing workplace environment characterized by fair policies and open communication. Recognition of potential and dedication to continuous learning are valued and acknowledged, enabling career advancement for those diligent and willing to learn.

The workplace enhancements, including the recent installation of a karaoke system in the canteen, exemplify the company's commitment to employee well-being and camaraderie. Beyond the confines of work, my colleagues and I often gather after hours to enjoy moments of harmony through song. Nippon Paint has become more than a workplace – it is a second home, where I experience a profound sense of belonging and comfort. Balancing cherished moments with my family and colleagues has made my professional journey not just fulfilling but deeply enriching.

For those contemplating joining our vibrant community, I extend a warm welcome to Nippon Paint – a place where growth is nurtured, and a sense of belonging flourishes.

My journey with Nippon Paint began on August 2015 when I joined as a Supervisor in the Raw Materials department. Within two years, I was honoured with a promotion to Senior Supervisor before I moved to Building Materials two years ago. Originally from Malaysia, I obtained Permanent Residency a decade ago. A proud father to two young children, my commitment to both work and family is paramount.

Having previously worked in five or six companies, the standout feature of Nippon Paint is its comprehensive training programs. The company goes above and beyond by suggesting courses beneficial to individual growth, fostering numerous opportunities for learning and development.

In my role, I oversee the receipt of goods, coordinate order deliveries to customers, and manage procurement activities, requiring frequent communication with suppliers in both Singapore and Malaysia. Collaboration is a key aspect of our work culture, and I find myself reaching out to colleagues not only within my department but also across various departments, such as the Service Centre and Receiving department, when challenges arise. The open sharing of ideas and information is a testament to the supportive environment at Nippon Paint.

The exceptional staff benefits here surpass any I've encountered before, with activities ranging from departmental gatherings to company-wide events, including the occasional post-work karaoke session, fostering strong bonds among colleagues.

Balancing work and family are a priority in my life, and Nippon Paint plays a crucial role in supporting my family's well-being. The financial stability from my role allows my wife and children to enjoy a comfortable life in Singapore. Weekends are dedicated to quality time with my kids, and while I try to minimize work commitments during these precious moments, I am readily available in case of emergencies.

If someone were to inquire about working at Nippon Paint, my response would be straightforward – send your resume my way, and I'll gladly forward it to HR!

In February 2021, I embarked on my journey with Nippon Paint as a Store Operator, and within two years, in March 2023, I was honoured with a promotion to Supervisor in the Raw Materials department. Now in my early 50s, I envision continuing my professional journey at Nippon Paint until my retirement.

As a Malaysian, my commitment to Nippon Paint involves a daily commute to Singapore, where I travel five days a week by motorbike. Commencing my day at 3:30 am, I ensure I leave my home in Johor by 4:20 am, regardless of weather conditions, to arrive at work with ample time to spare.

My role encompasses diverse responsibilities, including the receipt of goods, inventory control, and providing leadership and support to my team. The bond with my colleagues transcends the professional realm—we are a family. True teamwork prevails, with a mutual commitment to assisting one another to ensure collective success.

Language diversity, particularly with most of my team members being from China, occasionally presents a challenge. However, effective communication is achieved through collective efforts. In instances where language barriers arise, we utilize tools such as Google Translate, ensuring that important announcements are shared seamlessly. Regardless of cultural backgrounds, my colleagues are akin to brothers.

Nippon Paint stands out not only for its commitment to a familial work culture but also for providing exceptional working conditions. The provision of free lunch, complimentary transport for those residing in Singapore, and a plethora of staff events contribute to a positive and enriching work environment. Furthermore, the continuous learning opportunities offered by the company add significant value to my professional growth.

Having experienced the benefits firsthand, I have enthusiastically recommended Nippon Paint to numerous individuals. The sense of camaraderie, the excellent working conditions, and the opportunities for personal and professional development make every journey from Malaysia to Singapore worthwhile.

In my role as a Logistics Fleet Supervisor at Nippon Paint Singapore, I am delighted to share my experiences as a part of this remarkable organization for the past year. Hailing from Jilin, China, my journey here has not only been a professional one but has also forged strong familial connections within the company.

Each day, my responsibilities begin early in the morning as I oversee the maintenance and condition of the vehicles in my fleet. Prioritizing thorough checks, we ensure that the vehicles are in optimal condition before embarking on our daily deliveries. Upon our return, preparations for the next day's deliveries are diligently undertaken, typically concluding by evening.

One of the standout aspects of working at Nippon Paint is the exceptional staff benefits. Monthly group bonding activities provide a platform for cultural exchange, fostering a sense of camaraderie among colleagues. These activities not only allow me to learn about different cultures but also provide an opportunity to relax, have fun, and create lasting memories. I make it a point to capture these moments and share them with my family, offering them a glimpse into the warmth and happiness we experience here.

While financial stability remains a primary goal, working at Nippon Paint has been a transformative journey of personal growth. I have acquired proficiency in basic English and aspire for further advancement within the company. The supportive leadership, marked by genuine care and concern for the well-being of the team, has been a driving force. The open communication channels, where suggestions are not only heard but often implemented, exemplify the familial atmosphere fostered by both bosses and colleagues.

What sets Nippon Paint apart is the strong sense of belonging and camaraderie, transcending the conventional employer-employee dynamic. Here, we are not just colleagues; we are a family. The warmth and care extended by everyone make Nippon Paint not just a workplace but a second home for me. I am grateful for the dual sense of belonging – Nippon Paint in Singapore and my home in China.

My association with Nippon Paint began earlier this year when the company acquired the small logistics firm I used to work for, along with several other subcontractors. Now, officially serving as a Senior Executive in the Logistics Fleet department, I find myself approaching the age of 60.

In my capacity, I oversee the day-to-day operations of the logistics fleet, focusing on ensuring delivery excellence and end-to-end customer satisfaction. Managing a team of 20 drivers and lorry attendants, hailing from diverse backgrounds such as China, Malaysia, and India, requires effective communication—a task I find fulfilling as I am proficient in both English and Mandarin.

While maintaining a balance between work and personal life lacks a definitive guide, I cherish the moments outside work by relaxing and spending quality time with family and loved ones. As I navigate the bustling work hours, I find solace in the simplicity of leisure and family bonding during my downtime.

Nippon Paint places a commendable emphasis on staff engagement, evident through monthly activities and celebrations that contribute to a vibrant work culture. The recognition as one of the Top 250 Best Employers in Singapore is a testament to the company's commitment to fostering a positive and rewarding workplace. Importantly, Nippon Paint values its employees, offering due recognition and rewards for their contributions.

Looking ahead, I express a sincere desire to continue working for as long as I am able, with the vision of retiring from Nippon Paint. The supportive environment, engaging activities, and the company's genuine appreciation for its employees make it an ideal workplace where I hope to contribute my skills and dedication for the foreseeable future.
